A happy book birthday to a book we were first dazzled by back in August at a sneaky Walker Books preview event. The wonderful "Blue Penguin" by Petr Horacek...
It's not always easy being different. When a little penguin emerges from his egg, he's bright blue not black like all the other baby penguins. Thus begins the story of a rather unique but extremely talented little fellah who always feels like he doesn't quite belong with his fellow penguins.
The little blue penguin dreams of one day finding a new home, one where he can feel welcome. In his dreams he dreams of singing a song and being whisked away by a giant white whale.
When he wakes up, penguin starts to make up his new song, attracting the attention of another penguin who thinks his song is beautiful. "Please teach me!" she says, and together they make the most beautiful music.
Other penguins soon sit up and take notice. Perhaps at last Blue Penguin might find that being different isn't so bad after all?
Petr Horacek has a truly amazing gift for producing lyrical and beautiful prose, married perfectly to his stunning painted illustrations. This book is no exception, and we urge anyone with tiddly toddlers to make sure their bookcase has a good few of Petr Horacek's books tucked in there, they're absolutely pitch perfect for snuggly bedtime reading.
Charlotte's favourite bit: When Blue Penguin meets the girl penguin for the first time to share a song.
Daddy's favourite bit: A truly talented fellah is Petr, each and every book deserves a place in your book collection and this latest tale is utterly delightful!
