Our Second Picture Book of the Week this week once again sees Adam and Lisa Murphy dig up another amazing selection of historical figures, this time with an all-female cast...
"Corpse Talk: Ground Breaking Women" (pun intended, of course) by Adam and Lisa Murphy is a regular series that runs in the fabulous Phoenix Comic, and regularly digs into history. This time though, the sisters are doin' it for themselves!
Collecting together a simply stunning selection of amazingly inspirational women and letting them tell their own stories from beyond the grave is of course the stock-in-trade genius of Adam & Lisa's series.
From Elizabeth the 1st to Emily Davison, from Anne Frank to Ching Shih, these are incredible tales of bravery, cunning, cleverness and creativity from right across the board.
Picking one example, the story of Anne Frank is told in exquisite detail and there's a jaw-dropping spread of how The Frank family and others managed to hide out in a sophisticated set of rooms tucked away at the back of a business premises in order to hide from German troops.
Each of the stories is brought to life (if that's quite the correct term for a book revolving around Adam digging folk up to interview them!) in amazing detail in such a hugely engaging way.
I really wish these were used more in schools. Can you imagine how much fun history lessons would be if the dead could come back to life and tell their own stories themselves?
"Corpse Talk: Ground Breaking Women" by Adam and Lisa Murphy is out now, published by David Fickling Books (kindly supplied for review).
