Booky Advent Calendar Day 22: "Snow Penguin" by Tony Mitton and Alison Brown (Bloomsbury Children's Books)

Day 22 of our Booky Advent Calendar and here's a gorgeously cute little story for your really tiny ones.

Who could resist a story about a brave little penguin.

In "Snow Penguin" our curious little penguin hero decides to explore the ice and the snow and the sea.

On his travels he sees two blue whales, a family of sea lions and a whole school of orca, but soon Penguin starts to miss his own family.

Sometimes coming home is the best adventure of all.

Tony's rhyming style is a joy to read aloud. Coupled with Alison's cuddly and fun illustrations, this is a lovely little bedtime read for snuggling up with - and if by now your kids are practically hopping from foot to foot with excitement about the big day coming up, this'll definitely relax and calm them down a tad.

"Snow Penguin" by Tony Mitton and Alison Brown is out now, published by Bloomsbury Children's Books (kindly supplied for review).

Three new picture book corkers coming from Bloomsbury in October

The 6th of October is definitely a red letter day for fabulous children's picture books. Bloomsbury Publishing have three new arrivals popping up on that day so come along and say hello!

Tom (Herman's Letter) Percival once again delivers a deliciously brilliant picture book future classic in "By the Light of the Moon" - a gentle story that will help any child dealing with the upheaval and uproar of a house move.

Little Ivan finds his new house strange and can't sleep. His old house was warm, familiar and friendly and this new place definitely is not!

Poor Ivan lies awake and then sees a shimmering light come down from the sky.

The light turns into a creature called a Moji, and it takes him on a fabulous night-time adventure, up high into space, bounding through starlit forests and down deep into the oceans.

Ivan has never had so much fun! And the magical Moji shows him that soon the new house will feel like home.

Brilliant and magical, and chock full of atmosphere, "By the Light of the Moon" by Tom Percival is released on 6th October, Published by Bloomsbury.

Hugely talented Debi Gliori also has two new titles coming on the 6th...

"Little Owl's Egg" with illustrations by Alison Brown is a heartwarming tale of what it's like when you're expecting a new brother or sister, and you've been used to having all your parents' attention.

Little Owl isn't at all pleased to hear that there's a baby owl in the egg Mummy has laid. So Mummy pretends it might be a baby penguin ... or crocodile ... or even an elephant!

In the fun of imagining different kinds of siblings, Little Owl realises that a baby owl might just be the best thing of all, and starts to become more and more excited about the imminent arrival after all.

Debi's books always impart soothing messages for children coping with different situations, and so many children will love the theme of this.

"Little Owl's Egg" by Debi Gliori and Alison Brown arrives freshly hatched on 6th October, published by Bloomsbury.

Last but by no means least, another fab book from Debi...

"Goodnight World" is a beautiful rhyming bedtime book that's guaranteed to settle even the most busy little bees.

Goodnight ice and goodnight snow,
Goodnight lights above, aglow.

Join in reading aloud the list of important things to say goodnight to - ships, animals, plants, toys and, of course, the sun - in this gorgeous lyrical book.

"Goodnight World" by Debi Gliori is published on 6th October by Bloomsbury.

Snow Bear by Tony Mitton and Alison Brown (Bloomsbury Publishing)

Do you remember snow? Not the wussy "Southern" stuff we tend to get in our neck of the woods, but the really deep stuff. If not, refresh your memory with a crisp, cold but cuddly story of a tiny little snow bear...

Day three of Little Tiger Press's "Reading Rocks" Week - Let's take a look at "Mighty Mo" by Alison Brown (Little Tiger Press)

Mighty Mo

Written and Illustrated by
Alison Brown

Published by Little Tiger Press

Oh No! Or should that be "Oh NO!" Mo the Racoon is a well-meaning little fellow but try as he might, he just can't seem to get anything right!

Living at the Golden Dodo Zoo, Mo kicks his heels around as bored as bored could be. So what CAN he be good at?

In Alison Brown's latest fantastic book, we meet Mo who really only wants to be good at something - anything - but keeps messing up. Mo tries his hand at Hairdressing, to disastrous results. Mo tries to be an ice cream man, but no one's going to want to clear up the catastrophic mess left in his wake (and no flake!)

Perhaps though, Mo has hidden talents - only revealed when a sneaky and nasty burglar goes on the prowl in the zoo, looking to steal the infamous golden dodo (look out for him on every page - Charlotte absolutely LOVED spotting him and finding him and your tiddlers will too!)

Fun and energetic, with Alison's fabulous illustrations and storytelling prowess coming to the fore. Another corker of a summer read for Little Tiger Press's Reading Rocks campaign!

Charlotte's best bit: Looking out for that sneaky burglar, creeping around the zoo (and hiding in the most amusing places!)

Daddy's Favourite bit: Alison Brown makes it look SO EASY to produce such lovely books. A corker!

Eddie and Dog by Alison Brown (Little Tiger Press)

We're having a bit of a dog-day here at ReadItDaddy today (it's almost like we planned it this way!) so following our review of Owen Davey's beautiful "Laika the Astronaut" here's another beautiful book featuring a cool canine.

Eddie is a little boy who lives high up in a tiny flat. Eddie's a lonely chap and longs for a friend to join in with his games.

Enter a rather determined little dog, who lights up Eddie's life - for a short while at least because when Eddie takes Dog home, Eddie's mum decides that their flat is too small for a dog and dogs need space to roam and to exercise.

Sadly, Eddie waves goodbye to dog. But guess who comes back the next day?

Alison Brown's debut for Little Tiger Press is brilliant, with superb artwork and a touching story of one dog's determination to find a loving home - and one little boy's quest to find the perfect friend.

Again and again Eddie and Dog are separated but Dog is doggedly (sorry) determined that he will win the day. Does he succeed in the end? You know what we're going to say - you'll have to read the book and find out of course.

Normally at ReadItDaddy Towers we are firmly in the 'Cat' camp but this week we've enjoyed canine company so much. You can too, just pick up Eddie and Dog and read a touching and lovely little tale about a boy and his loyal and loving pooch.

Charlotte's best bit: Dog's fabulous little scooter, vrrm vrrm!

Daddy's favourite bit: Dog's rather splendid impression of Snoopy as he flies back to Eddie in a tiny (and rather brilliant) little plane.
