This absolutely gorgeous book is out today, and it's a glorious celebration of creativity from ten Children's Laureates, gathering together some truly inspirational stories and art in one gorgeous tome.
It's the 20th Anniversary of the Waterstones Children's Laureateship, in partnership with Booktrust and Walker Books are publishing this very special book to celebrate the talents of Quentin Blake, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Rosen, Julia Donaldson, Anthony Browne, Malorie Blackman, Chris Riddell and Lauren Child. So yep, a "who's who" of just about all our favourite book folk then, so you just know this is going to be good!
Children's Laureates are the perfect ambassadors for children's literature, and have each spent their years working in conjunction with Book Trust and other organisations to promote and enhance children's literary experiences in each case.
This beautiful gift anthology marks twenty wonderful years of the Laureateship, with some wonderful anecdotes from each of the laureates from their time in the chair, to stories, poems and pictures by all ten former honourees. Among others, Quentin Blake tells the stories behind his pictures of weird and wonderful beasts, Michael Morpurgo draws on childhood memories for a moving wartime tale and Michael Rosen plays with language and shapes in his witty, read-aloud poems.
Each contribution is designed to inspire children to create their own work, and is accompanied by a note from the authors – rare insights from the finest talent in the world of children’s books. Above all else, Flights of Fancy celebrates the Laureateship's most important achievement: encouraging children to let their imaginations soar.
50p from every copy sold goes to Booktrust.
Sum this book up in a sentence: A fantastic collection of inspirational stories, poems and illustrations from some of the mightiest talents working in kid lit today.
"Flights of Fancy" by various authors and artists, is out now published by Walker Books (kindly supplied for review).

| Happy reading books! It's Booktime! |
We're now able to tell you what it was all about, and it's very exciting news indeed.
The Booktime 2013-2014 titles have been officially announced and they are:
"But Excuse Me, That is My Book" by Lauren Child (Charlie and Lola) - Published by Puffin
"Tom's Mad Mop" by Celia Warren and Bill Ledger (Bug Club Series) - Published by Pearson UK
730,000 children aged 4-5 in England and Wales will each receive a free Booktime book pack in their first year of primary school. With two free books in every pack, along with additional copies for teachers and librarians, 1.5 million books in total will be given through Booktime, which aims to inspire a lifelong love of reading by encouraging families to have fun reading together.
The selection panel included teachers, librarians and us and the selection process was pretty tricky, so many great books were included this year and it was an extremely tough job to choose between them.
You can see our review of "But Excuse Me, That Is My Book" by clicking the link. It's a glorious celebration of libraries and books, and several changes - driven by feedback from the panel - have now been included in the book (a busier library, yay!) Charlie and Lola are a massive hit with Charlotte, and she loves trips to the libraries so the book was a brilliant choice.
"Tom's Mad Mop" is also brilliant, an early reader book that fizzes with energy and excitement and with a little sunshine slowly creeping out from behind the clouds, the perfect book to celebrate watery antics in the garden this summer. We can't wait to get out there and do exactly that!
We really hope you enjoy the books, we really enjoyed being involved in the process and are right behind Bookstart and Booktime all the way.
Here's a pic from the super secret selection process!

| How cool and rewarding is reading to your child? We know! Want to know more? |
The Booktrust is spearheading a campaign to encourage more dads to read to their children. With the aid of "The Dad's Army", an A-List of celebrities, authors and high profile dads, they're encouraging dads to become more involved and to find out for themselves just how rewarding reading to their children can be.
Obviously this is a delicious idea and a good fit for the #readitMD2013 (Read It Mummies and Daddies 2013) campaign we started way back in January. We initially thought it would be a good idea to focus on dads, but widened the campaign to include mums who also miss out on reading to their children. Though the numbers show that just 26% of dads are the "main readers" to their children at home, with all sorts of reasons given for why they don't read more often to their kids, mums too need the same support and encouragement for the same reasons, particularly in households where they are the main or indeed the only breadwinner.
We're right behind the Booktrust campaign every step of the way! Join the Dad's (And mums) army who already know how great reading to your children is.
There's an awesome post from a reading daddy here that is definitely worth a read through. We are out there, we really are.

Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan are extending their book recommendations to cover children's books, in a partnership with both WH Smith and The Book Trust.
The initial selection of books carries recommendations from contemporary titles, such as 'Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder' (highbrow stuff) as well as classics like Elisabeth Beresford's 'Wombles' books.
The aim is a good one - to make more and more parents aware of both the Book Trust, and a selection of new and established writers whose works are worthy of mention in the Richard and Judy 'list'.
As with the adult book recommendations, a team of individuals work in conjunction with the popular daytime TV presenters to ensure that recommended books meet exacting standards.
The adult scheme has seen many authors propelled into the best sellers list almost overnight. Anything that generates a huge amount of interest in reading and books can only be a good thing particularly when it's aimed at youngsters.
