ReadItDaddy Reads aloud - Mostly Books and Usborne's 40th Anniversary, the perfect time for storytelling fun!

ReadItDaddy and a brilliant audience at the Mostly Books / Usborne 40th Anniversary Day. Awesome fun!
With nerves jangling, and a book bag stuffed with goodies we made our merry way to Mostly Books in Abingdon to join in with the Usborne 40th Anniversary celebrations going on at our favourite local indie bookstore.

We kept a keen eye on the weather, and thankfully the rainclouds stayed away long enough for us to sit comfortably, and begin.

Our chosen list of books to read was:

"My Big Shouting Day" by Rebecca Patterson (Jonathan Cape PB Ltd)

"Splat the Cat" by Rob Scotton (HarperCollins Children's Books)

"The Bear Under the Stairs" by Helen Cooper (Picture Corgi)

"We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury (Walker Books)

"Peck Peck Peck" by Lucy Cousins (Walker Books)

Starting off with that mischievous woodpecker in "Peck Peck Peck", children loved the idea of the book being full of holes and joined in wonderfully - shouting "Peck Peck Peck" and even "Kiss Kiss" when daddy woodpecker kisses his little protege goodnight.

We then moved on to "My Big Shouting Day" which was again a great book for audience participation as children read (and shouted) Bella's lines.

I'd never realised how hard it is to actually keep a book pointing the right way to an audience, reading it side on - or even sometimes reading it upside down - and of course turning pages without them sticking together or you skipping ahead, eek - but I guess perfection comes with practice.

We rounded off our half an hour (which seemed to go so quickly - I could've quite happily carried on all afternoon but I think the kids would've got very fidgety!) with the fabulous "We're going on a Bear Hunt" which was being read in the picture in our header above - to much joy and participation, which was utterly brilliant to see.

We had a lot of fun, the children and their parents were wonderful - and we can't wait to do this again sometime soon.

Huge thanks to Mark at Mostly Books for having us, thanks to the parents and kids who came along to listen to story time and thanks to Usborne for having such a brilliant 40th Anniversary day with lots of goodie bags on hand!

Some more pics from the day:

Charlotte and friends sitting very quietly!
"Splat the Cat" - tail wiggling wildly with worry!
Just in case I missed the Bear in "The Bear Under the Stairs" the kids were on hand to point him out!
Bear Hunt!! Swishy Swashy Swishy Swashy!

ReaditDaddy 'Read aloud' for Usborne's 40th Anniversary celebrations at Mostly Books, Abingdon! Do come along!

Reading aloud to children - scary but fun!
Mostly Books in Abingdon have been kind enough to invite us along to join in with their "Usborne Day" 40th Anniversary celebrations on Saturday, 5th October 2013.

We're joining in too, so from 2pm we'll be reading a selection of our favourite children's story books, and there'll be the chance to enter a free Usborne Books prize draw so please do come along.

We're still trying to decide exactly which books we are going to read but it promises to be a fun day and hopefully my sore throat will clear up nicely by then so I can do lots of silly voices and get you lovely folk to join in too!

See you there!

#ReadItMD13 - "Brilliant Bookshops" week - Celebrate your local independent booksellers!

Hedgehog Books, Penrith - An aladdin's cave of booky goodness!
For this week's #ReadItMD13 theme week we thought we'd take a look at beautiful bookshops! There are many reasons why we champion them in a climate where quite often they're overlooked and struggling to stay afloat (amongst others, they pay their taxes!) . Why are they worth shouting from the rooftops about when they're not always the cheapest option?

It's not just about the price of books, it's about the customer service you'll often find in your local independent bookseller. A chance to meet knowledgeable staff who love books as much as you do and quite often (if you're a regular) get to know what you like and what to recommend to you. Local indies always have something going on with various author events and book celebrations throughout the year, a great chance to meet other bookfolk! Above all though there's that unmatched feeling when you walk into a book store of not knowing what to look at first and that's the buzz that means we can barely pass one by.

Recommendations-wise, we've tipped our hat at the top of this article to Hedgehog Bookshop in Penrith. Not exactly our local but they have a mail order service and go above and beyond to source books that aren't always easy to come by. Looking at the photos of the store, we'd definitely be popping in if we're ever in the vicinity.

More local to us, we've championed our fantastic local indies quite often.

Mostly Books - No longer "Black Books" it's all decked out in lovely green paint now

Mostly Books (in Stert St, Abingdon, Oxon) is another place that wows the minute you step inside the door. I'm often shuffled through the adult book section at the front of the store to the cosy nook out back where all the children's books are lined up along the walls. Often there are colouring sheets and activities tucked away out there too. For a small store, it's surprisingly well stocked and Mark Thornton (the shop owner) runs an entertaining blog and twitter feed to keep us local yokels informed. Like most local independent bookshops, Mostly Books often stocks fantastic local books about Abingdon and its rich and varied history. Definitely worth popping in, not just for the brilliant children's book selection but for all manner of books of local interest.

The Abingdon Bookstore
We're also lucky enough to have The Abingdon Bookstore nestling amongst the chain stores in our local precinct. Again it's a fairly small store but has a great selection of children's books - and always has some great 'seasonal' window displays.

We'd love to see photos or links to your local indies. Drop a comment at the bottom of this article and join us celebrating why indies are so vital to keeping us all stocked up with lovely lovely books!

Muchas Gracias, Abingdon Blog

The fantastic Abingdon Blog recently covered Mostly Books and World Book day. Mostly Books is an important independent Abingdon bookshop, one of two in the town (the other being The Abingdon Bookstore). Both shops stock a varied selection of adult and children's books that fall outside the normal chain-store 'big publisher' stock.

The coverage also included a link back to this humble blog so many thanks to the Abingdon Blog for the coverage, and a warm welcome to all new visitors finding their way here.

As a catch-up, ReadItDaddy is a children's book blog with a view to covering a varied selection of books every week, most of which are borrowed from the excellent Abingdon Library - which has a brilliant children's section.

Comments and feedback are most welcome as are new followers!
