ReadItDaddy's Second Book of the Week - Week Ending 16th October 2015: "Harry Potter - The Character Vault" by Jody Revenson (Titan Books)

We do love a book that gives us valuable insights into the movie industry, particularly when it covers one of our fave book and movie series ever. Let's step inside "Harry Potter - The Character Vault" - ALOHOMORA!
Way back in the mists of time, I remember when the announcement was made that Daniel Radcliffe had been chosen for the movie adaptation of "Harry Potter". He looked absolutely perfect, every inch the boy to step into the shoes of one of the most popular characters in children's fiction of the last two decades.

Of course, the rest is history but it's been absolutely fascinating to dig into this huge and luxurious book detailing the characters of the books and how they made the transition to the movies.

In-depth costume discussions and designs, and a ton of amazing anecdotes from cast and crew make this a fascinating read from the word go.

The real draw was reading how the movies evolved to reflect the books perfectly, starting off fairly light hearted in comparison to the darker and more grown-up overtones of the later books and movies.

Hermione Granger's stunning dress (and her wand) from "The Goblet of Fire"
As you'd expect, the book is absolutely loaded with amazing photos, illustrations and drawings from the movies, with some really fabulous costume and prop designs. Each director put their very own 'stamp' on movie versions and both Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuaron describe their own unique approaches to adapting the books for the screen.

Jody Revenson has also produced a fantastic "Creature Vault" which is also highly recommended. For Potter-heads everywhere though, this is a nigh-on essential purchase and with christmas coming up, what better stocking stuffer could you wish for than a big thick and awesome book like this!

Charlotte's favourite bit: Hermione's amazing ball gown for "The Goblet of Fire" and Luna Lovegood's fab and freaky fashion style.

Daddy's favourite bit: A truly fascinating insight into the amazing work of prop and costume makers, makeup and effects wizards bringing some of the best-loved characters in children's fiction to life in these awesome movies.
