ReaditDaddy's Second Book of the Week - Week Ending 20th November 2015 - "Shackleton's Journey Activity Book" by William Grill (Flying Eye Books)

Our second Book of the Week this week takes another fantastic look at a truly stunning book. "Shackleton's Journey Activity Book" by William Grill...

William Grill's epic "Shackleton's Journey" was a well deserved Book of the Week winner in 2014. Capturing our imaginations with an amazing mix of facts and figures and some gloriously detailed and stylish illustrations, we fell completely in love with the book (and it's great to note that even Charlotte's grandparents wanted to borrow it!)

Now there's a second chance to enjoy William Grill's amazing book, and this time you're positively encouraged to draw all over the follow up.

(I know, I know, do publishers know how HARD it is to deface such gorgeous books?)

Revisiting Shackleton's danger-fraught mission to the South Pole, this time children can join in with the preparation for the mission - writing their own dream lists of supplies if they were to undertake a freezing cold voyage into the unknown (Charlotte insists that gallons of hot chocolate with marshmallows would be a staple of her own preparations), drawing up their inventories for ultimate explorer gear, and scribbling their own maps and trails to ensure they stay safe and well.

Each activity is nicely put together to work well in conjunction with the original book (in fact if you haven't already got a copy of that, you definitely owe it to yourself to grab both!)

Stimulating children's curiosity in wonderful ways, and more importantly a thoroughly absorbing and engaging activity book that'll be perfect as a christmas stocking-stuffer, it's nigh on essential stuff.

Charlotte's favourite bit: Trying to imagine how to fit all the things she wants to take with her into a sledge or rucksack (something tells me her Playmobil Cowboy Fort isn't going to be much use in the frozen wastelands)

Daddy's favourite bit: Some truly fantastic and imaginative activities based around the original book, the perfect accompaniment that also works really nicely as a classroom / teaching resource for children learning all about the great explorers. Brilliant!
