ReadItDaddy's First Book of the Week - Week Ending 7th October 2016 - "Ludwig the Space Dog" by Henning Lohlein (Templar Publishing)

This week's first book of the week literally leaps right out at you!
I'm always careful to try and get Charlotte to choose Book of the Week winners less on their gimmicks and more on their actual worth as a story book so when we first saw "Ludwig the Space Dog", though we were both bowled over by the cover and the idea that you could experience a children's book in 3D, we definitely wanted to know more.

Thankfully this is Henning Lohlein we're talking about, a fantastic storyteller and illustrator who doesn't really need 3D to help his characters and stories leap off the page, they're perfectly capable of doing so all on their own.

Meet Ludwig, a storybook dog who lives in idyllic bliss within the pages of a book. Ludwig is a restless soul though, and loves nothing better than a spot of stargazing. But how can Ludwig make the break from the printed page and out into the stratosphere?

Something crashes into Ludwig's book, a thing from another dimension and soon it becomes clear that this is Ludwig's ticket to the stars themselves and we as the readers are along for the ride.

The story is thrilling and original, the artwork is gorgeous (a wonderful mix of illustration and collage) and of course there's the lure of the 3D which works rather nicely too!

What a fantastic book!

Charlotte's Best Bit: Ludwig's super-cool rocket and the fabulous 3D stuff!

Daddy's favourite bit: A fantastic idea, not just a gimmicky book but a brilliantly original story definitely assisted along in the 'wow' stakes by the 3D. Awesome stuff!
