Kids and pets, a match made in heaven or a disaster waiting to happen? Meet single-minded Katie McGinty who really wants a very particular pet!


The rather snazzy eye-catching cover of this book might just give away the type of animal Katie McGinty covets in "Katie McGinty Wants a Pet" by Jenna Harrington and Finn Simpson. Most children get to an age where they constantly nag about getting their own pet, an animal to look after, to care for (and as mum sagely points out "to dump on their long suffering parents once the glitz and glamour of cleaning up poo and pee disappears").

Katie doesn't want a guinea pig. She doesn't want a dog, a cat or a rabbit. Katie has her sights set slightly higher and as you may have already guessed, Katie wants...a ZEBRA!

Poor Dad doesn't know what to make of this request as they head to the pet store. How on earth can you keep a zebra clean? What do they eat? How on earth do you take one for walks? Katie is a smart kid though and has an answer for everything (don't you know that Zebras eat spaghetti and that local swimming pools have a relaxed policy on Zebra baths?)

Does Katie get her wish? There's a rather hilarious pay-off at the end of the book which we won't spoil. Suffice to say that Katie's dad is going to have some CRACKING roses next year :)

Daddy's Favourite bit: A fun story touching on all too familiar territory for most parents! Maybe a guinea pig won't be so bad after all, eh mum?
