Kicking off with a true feast of glorious natural history facts and figures, curated by Libby Walden and featuring the work of ten amazing illustrators who truly bring the subject to life.
"In Focus: Forests" is a book packed with amazing animals, glorious greenery and all the things that call the forest "Home".
The book talks about some of the most famous forests on the planet such as the Black Forest in South-West Germany, on the border with France. This vast area is a truly amazing biodiverse environment that is protected, and thus is full of life from the forest floor right to the tips of the tall spruce and fir trees that stretch into the sky.
Grace Easton draws an amazing picture of The Black Forest and in turn, other artists examine the Rainforests (Suzanne Washington), The Anatomy of Trees (Julie Colombet), National Parks (Sol Linero), Forest mythology (Irene Montano), Peoples of the Forest (Alessandra Santelli), Produce and Preservation (Jenny Wren), Mangrove Forests (Aaron Cushley), the Amazon Rainforest (Marc Pattenden) and Kelp Forests (Stephanie Fizer-Coleman).
As you can see, this one really does cover a lot of ground and is a nice hefty book to dig into, with great fold-out spreads.

Wilfred and Olbert are our time-travelling guides on a trip back to the very dawn of time, as the dynamic duo discover a mysterious artefact that allows them to nip through a portal back to any period in history.
By presenting a really cool comic-like story but also seeding the story with amazing and incredible facts about prehistoric life, this is a really excellent approach to helping kids cross over from stories into non-fiction with ease.
With characterful and brilliant illustrations, and a whole host of facts all about prehistoric times, from life that began under the sea, to gigantic creatures that later stalked the earth and soared through the sky, this is a real winner and we absolutely love this approach. Let's hope there are more adventures for Wilfred and Olbert soon!

James specialises in interesting and absorbing books on the subject of space, and this is no exception as we learn a little more about humankind's efforts to move beyond our home planet out into the inky blackness of space.
Learn all about space shuttles, rockets, and the International Space Station in this beautifully illustrated and presented guide that will give tiny tiddlers a real head start when it comes to learning more about space science and space exploration.
Really brilliant this. We never get tired of space books!

Bee numbers are in decline. For most people this doesn't feel like it's a big deal but bees are a truly vital part of our ecosystem, our pollinators that make sure that all our amazing plant life - and of course our food - can grow and flourish.
The rest of the minibeasts realise the bees have disappeared, so it's up to them to join together and find out what has happened to their buzzy friends.
This is beautifully presented, with engaging "lift the flap" bits to enhance a story that is a great introduction to the importance of bees and other insect life that lives on our planet.

"The Girls" by Lauren Ace and Jenny Lovlie (Ace and Lovlie - what a fab pair of names and what a team!) introduces Four little girls who first meet as tiny toddlers, playing under an apple tree.
As the tree grows tall and begins to bear fruit, the girls form a bond that grows as they share secrets, dreams, worries and schemes.
It's a wonderfully observed and beautifully illustrated tale that charts the girls' lives through ups and downs and laughter and tears.
Find out how their friendship flourishes as the years pass by and the girls become women.
Wonderfully written with some really fab illustrations, this is a real 'feelgood' picture book that little girls will absolutely adore.

Wonderful lyrical storytelling coupled with sumptuous luxurious colourful painted illustrations, this is a really gorgeous book with a simple but powerfull message at its heart.

Fiona Ross, Author of Hyde and Squeak, shares her favourite (or least favourite) monsters with us - a groovy guest post!
A groovy Halloween blog post from Fiona Ross, author of "Hyde and Squeak"? Well, we don't mind if we do. Take it away Fiona!
Top 10 Monsters with Fiona Ross
This was really tough! I love anything and everything monstrous (think I needed at least a top 20!). So in no particular order:
1: Animal (from the Muppets) He’s just plain bonkers and loves music, how could he not be on this list?
2: Oddbod (from Carry on Screaming) Oh my, Oddbod used to scare the pants off me as a child.
3: Bowser (aka King Koopa from Super Mario Bros) I’m a huge Mario fan and still play Super Mario Bros. Bowser’s aim is to kidnap Princess Peach and triumph over Mario, in my opinion that’s downright dirty!
4: Beetlejuice (from Beetlejuice) This film blew me away when I first saw it, I can’t help but delight in his unpredictable, selfish, over bearing ways - he’s really gross!
5: Godzilla - I love Godzilla films and comics, it’s always a good feeling when you can root on the side of the monster.
6: Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (from Ghostbusters) A big, bouncy, giant, comical marshmallow that looks cute, but I wouldn’t want to risk getting on his bad side though!
7: Audrey ll (from Little Shop of Horrors) I had to include a monster from a musical!
8: Gorgon/Medusa - Just the thought of the Gorgon turns me to stone. I could’ve chosen numerous monsters from Greek mythology but for me this one is the most terrifying visually. I’m a big admirer of Hammer Films and Ray Harryhausen, and both have successfully and brought this character to life.
9: Cybermen (from Doctor Who) Watching Doctor Who was a ritual growing up so I was spoilt for choice with monsters, I picked the one that I used to like looking at in my brother’s Doctor Who annual - I still remember the haunting black and white image.
10: Dementors (from Harry Potter) These are horrific and I can’t think of anything more horrendous and frightening.

Nibbles the Book Monster comes crashing in on our entry on the Nibbles Blog Tour!
We're literally machine-gunning posts at you today, with two Blog Tour buses crashing in on the blog at the same time, dogs and cats living together - it's sheer chaos!
It was a hit!
We knew we had to work with Emma again, and when the early draft of Nibbles landed on my desk, I knew it had to be this book!
What’s not to love?
1 – A cute and cuddly, mischievous and mayhem-inducing monster - tick
2 – Everyone’s favourite fairy tale characters – tick
3 – Bags of humour – tick. And let’s not forget . . .
4 – Emma’s beautiful art! Tick, tick, tick!
The final object is a book-lover’s delight. It has a clear narrative hook that grabs hold of the reader and pulls you through the book. It’s elegantly simple but don’t let appearances fool you. I think Emma’s mentioned in previous posts that the development process was at times mind-boggling and head scratching! We had some fun editorial discussions on the phone, and via email, about approaches, endings and alternatives before Emma sent over her first set of thumbnails – here’s a little peek.
From this point, as an editor, it’s important to make sure that the basic storyline feels strong enough. If there are any points or moments that could work harder, be funnier, need smoothing out or changing then this is the moment to flag them and suggest how they might work differently. Hopefully these comments act as a springboard for the author/illustrator to take the text to the next level – which Emma always did!
Once the basic structure has confirmed we move on to character sketches:
Roughs:
Once this has all been delivered we arrange for the printer to make blank dummies:
...so that we can check that all the complex mini books and die-cuts work properly.
And then printer dummies:
...which we take to a book fair (either Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy or Frankfurt Book Fair in Gemany) and present to publishers from around the world who will buy the book and create editions for their countries.
So far, Nibbles is on track to publish in Britain, Australia, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Denmark, Holland and America.
And, as you can see, it’s been published with two different cover designs, both of which work best for the markets they have been sold to.
Why do we think this book has done so well internationally? We think it’s because it appeals to book lovers the world over. It’s an unashamed celebration of picture books and reading!
I also think that Emma’s art style is so accessible. There’s such a lot of humour in her characterization and intricate detail is her pieces that captivates children (and adults). Her palette is sophisticated but also bright and engaging – perfect for capturing and maintaining a reader’s attention.
I think it’s safe to say that Nibbles is munching his way around the world to great success! Hooray for Nibbles and hooray for Emma Yarlett!

For the second Blog Tour stop of the day, we're having a wee chat with a creative bunch of people from Little Tiger to celebrate the glorious launch day of Emma Yarlett's fabulous "Nibbles the Book Monster". Here's Ellie and Sadia from Little Tiger:

I’m Ellie (editor) and together with Sadia (designer), we were the very lucky pair who got to ride the Nibbles the Book Monster rollercoaster with Emma.
At Little Tiger we’ve been fans of Emma’s work from the start (or maybe slightly before the start!) of her illustration career. Back in 2010, whilst Emma was studying at Falmouth School of Art, she came into the Little Tiger offices to do some work experience with the design team! We kept our eyes on her developing style and increasing portfolio and, not long after she graduated, we were lucky enough to sign Emma up to illustrate Steve Smallman’s hilarious rhyming romp – Bear’s Big Bottom.
