"There are Bugs Everywhere" by Britta Teckentrup (Big Picture Press)

Bugs, love 'em or hate 'em (and during the summer you're probably like us, not a fan of 'em), they play a vitally important part in our ecosystem, as deftly demonstrated by super-talent Britta Teckentrup in her new book "There are Bugs Everywhere"

And yes, they truly are everywhere, in fact did you know that if it wasn't for bugs, we'd probably be wading neck-deep in all sorts of waste matter that bugs are extremely good at breaking down?

This and many other facts are explored in this highly colourful book perfect for early years kids who love all things creepy, crawly, flittery and slithery.

From the humble shield bug to the mighty bee, bugs play their role in ensuring our planet can carry on functioning as it does, and though we seemingly do our best to kill them off, we need them more than ever.

They're our pollinators, our waste disposal experts, and effective predators that keep even more pestilential critters from bugging us. Bugs are indeed everywhere and deserve to be celebrated.

Let's take a look inside, shall we then?

Bugs eat everything. From dung, to leaves, to...er...bits of us. Lovely!
Roam across the world and you'll find billions of different species, including the all important ones we cannot do without...

Never a moment's peace in the middle of a beehive.
Sum this book up in a sentence: A colourful and brilliant celebration of all things bug-like.

"There are Bugs Everywhere" by Britta Teckentrup is out now, published by Big Picture Press (kindly supplied for review).

ReadItDaddy's Second Picture Book of the Week - Week Ending 18th January 2019: "Mole's Star" by Britta Teckentrup (Orchard Books)

Our second Picture Book of the Week is the utterly charming and delightful "Mole's Star" by Britta Teckentrup.

Gently imparting the important message about how beautiful the world is, and how sometimes we take so much for granted, it's the story of a little mole who absolutely loves his new home underground.

But every evening, Mole comes out of his burrow to watch the twinkling stars in the sky above.

He falls in love with the stars, so much so that he wishes he could keep them all to himself.

Then one night he sees a shooting star, and suddenly his wish comes true.

There's just one problem: now that Mole's burrow is full of beautiful, shining stars, none of the other animals can enjoy them!

Mole's wish comes true, the stars are his for the taking!

Utterly beautiful page spreads like this really make this book stand out.
It's a warm cuddly story with a strong moral message that sometimes sharing can be better than just keeping things all to yourself, as mole discovers.

Simple, beautiful, brilliant. Britta is such an amazing talent in kidlit and this book really should be right at the top of your book buying list for 2019.

"Mole's Star" by Britta Teckentrup is out now, published by Orchard Books (kindly supplied for review).

A fab guest post from Britta Teckentrup, children's book superstar!

Today we're delighted to host a guest post from none other than Britta Teckentrup. Britta's new book "Oskar Loves" is a book celebrating the sheer joie de vivre of a wonderful little crow called Oskar.

So here's Britta with five things she loves...

5 things I love …

1.

I love sitting on trains…
I am sitting on a train as I write this blog post in fact - on my way to Prague.

Sitting on a train and watching the world go by seems to make room for ideas in my head.

Especially when the train is empty …

My best story ideas seem to find me on long train journeys.

2.

I love trees ….

It is something that is probably quite obvious from my books and artworks.

My flat is surrounded by two large trees.

It feels a little bit like living in a tree house.

But just a little bit … as I live right in the centre of Berlin.

I can’t wait for the leaves to turn yellow in October.

3.

I love cats …

I used to have two cats called Oskar and Sputnik.

Sadly Sputnik is no longer with us but Oskar is still going strong aged 20!

The crow character in ‘Oskar loves …’ is based a tiny little bit on Oskar the cat.

Oskar the cat sleeps a lot these days but still gets his crazy five minutes every now and then!

He also gets lots of treats and cuddles and rewards me by sleeping next to me when I am working on my books.

4.

I love autumn …

Everything about it!

The wind … the colours …the falling leaves ...

5.

I love books …

Of course I love books.

Our home is full of books.

I have got a large collection of picture books … I just can’t help myself. J

And my husband has got a library of over 2000 books.

Just like Oskar the crow … I love to get lost in books and discover new worlds and places.

And as I have written ‘Oskar loves…’ I LOVE everything Oskar loves, of course!

Two fab new titles for little ones from hugely talented author illustrator Britta Teckentrup

Britta Teckentrup is an immensely talented lady and we've been looking at two new books from Britta that are tons of fun.

The first is "One is Not a Pair" which is new from Big Picture Press.

We take a spotting journey of discovery with Britta as each page spread hides a fiendishly difficult to spot "odd one out"

Can your keen eyes pick the one that isn't a pair amongst this fab and colourful designs?

Here are some page samples to tempt you in (if that cover hasn't already won you over. We loved it!)

Ooh! Which toadstool stands alone, and doesn't belong with another?
Superfast planes flying in the sky. Which one is on its own?
With wonderful rhyming text to accompany the illustrations, this is a really gorgeous little spotting book. Out now from Big Picture Press.

Britta also has a new title coming from Prestel Publishing, introducing a brilliant little crow character who we instantly fell in love with...

In "Oskar Loves", meet Oskar the Crow who is full of joie de vivre. He invites us to learn a little bit more about his life, telling us all about the things he loves the most.

Oskar really loves taking his cute little fluffy cloud for a walk. Oskar LOVES Cherries.

What other things does Oskar love? Let's take a look at some sample pages..

You can see why we love Oskar so much, can't you!

Mmm! Nothing better than cherry pie and custard. Good choice, Oskar!
A glorious little picture book. "Oskar Loves" is out on 5th September 2016 from Prestel Publishing.

The "Take a Shape" series - Square by Britta Teckentrup (Words and Pictures)

Take a Shape: Square

Written and Illustrated by
Britta Teckentrup

Published by Words and Pictures

We don't often dabble in 'baby' books any more, mostly because "Little Miss" is getting very fussy as she gets older, but we both loved this book purely because it's A) utterly beautiful to look at and B) quirkily written and entertaining even when you're a cynical 7 (or 47) year old!

The "Take a Shape" series from Britta Teckentrup, published by Words and Pictures, is a lovely little square hard backed book exploring shapes, colours and characters. We follow animal characters having fun with shapes (in this case, the square) and other titles in the series explore circles, rectangles and triangles too.

Each scene is highly colourful and (as you'd expect) made from squares, so you'll find a cat springing out of a square box, a cute pup driving a square train, all bouncing along with the entertaining wordplay.

This looks like a brilliant little range to collect for your tiny ones as they progress from munchy chewable cloth books, through sturdy teething-aid board books and through to hardback / paper books they can love, look after and treasure.

"Take a Shape: Square" by Britta Teckentrup is out on 4th June 2015, published by Words and Pictures

Charlotte's best bit: Cat in a Box like a Jack in the box!

Daddy's Favourite bit: A fantastic early shapes and colours book, absolutely beautifully presented and sure to be a huge hit with your busy little tinies

Your Hand in My Hand by Mark Sperring and Britta Teckentrup (Orchard Books)

Your Hand in My Hand

Written by Mark Sperring

Illustrated by Britta Teckentrup

Published by Orchard Books

An utterly charming and heartwarming little story this. "Your Hand in My Hand" is a gently lilting poetical story of parental love and care, exquisitely written and beautifully illustrated.

As the delightful verse unfolds around the world of a mouse and her mum, take a trip through the four seasons as seen from a mouse-eye view. Exploring and sharing, it's the sort of book that makes us feel like we're being tightly swaddled in the world's softest fleecy blanket, ready for winter - or dashing out into the first rays of sunshine as spring emerges from the snows.

Britta's artwork is truly lovely, a fitting accompaniment to such tightly and expertly written poetry. A real treat this!

Charlotte's best bit: Puddle-splashing with mouse and mum!

Daddy's Favourite bit: Such a delightful, charming and heartwarming book. Sure to be a huge favourite read for parents and grandparents to share with their little ones
