Frankie's Magic Football - Frankie Saves Christmas (Frank Lampard / Mick Jackson / L & B Kids)
As more and more early readers and chapter books become a staple on ReadItDaddy we thought it would be a great idea to do a monthly roundup of some of the titles that have hit our doormat.
For your football-mad kids, "Frankie's Magic Football - Frankie Saves Christmas" by Frank Lampard (with illustrations by Mick Jackson) continues the engaging series of books with a footy and festive theme. Frankie's toughest draw yet pits Frankie and his friends against a rotten reindeer, a mischievous elf and a truly abominable snowman. It'll take more than a set of snowballs to defeat that little lot!
"Frankie's Magic Football - Frankie Saves Christmas" is released by L & B Kids on 2nd October 2014.

"The Rescue Princesses - The Ice Diamond" by Paula Harrison (Nosy Crow)
Charlotte has been absolutely crazy about "The Rescue Princesses" series by Paula Harrison since mummy used to read them to her. Now Charlotte's old enough to tuck herself away with the books, and she has been voraciously consuming them at an alarming rate of knots ever since (thank goodness there are 12 books to choose from in the series.
The two currently on Charlotte's reading pile are "The Ice Diamond" and "The Rainbow Opal" and though Charlotte's reading them in a fairly jumbled up order, she's absolutely loving this adventurous and magical series. The books are out now and Paula is hard at work on a new top-secret project for announcement in 2015 so keep an eye out for that!
Find out more about Paula and the Rescue Princesses on The Nosy Crow website.

A Treasury of Animal Stories by Holly Webb (Stripes Publishing)
Another extremely busy and prolific lady has a huge number of books arriving this autumn and winter. As well as "A Treasury of Animal Stories" (which collects together Holly's well-loved animal tales into one bumper volume) Holly has a new wintry book "The Winter Wolf" and a touching and heartwarming new tale about coping with loss and grief, with illustrations by Catherine Rayner - "A Tiger Tale". All three are available now so check out Holly's work, we just do not know how she manages to write so many brilliant stories, there truly is something for everyone.
Last but not least, a book that I had to kidnap all to myself. Jonathan Stroud is back with a fantastic followup to "The Screaming Staircase". "Lockwood and Co - The Whispering Skull" once again plunges us deep into the darkness of an alt-London, in the company of Lockwood, Lucy and George for more spooky goings on. I'd long been clamouring for the return of the classic ghost story when the first Lockwood book arrived with a clatter of chains and an expert swish of a rapier. "The Whispering Skull" does not disappoint, it's spooky and scary stuff but wrought with Jonathan Stroud's expert eye for detail and absolutely top notch characterisations. I couldn't put it down, seriously!
"Lockwood and Co - The Whispering Skull" arrived on September 25th from Doubleday Children's Books so go grab your copy now!
That's about it for our chapter book roundup for this month. We'll be making this a semi-regular thing so if chapter books and early readers are your thing, we'll be covering more and more on the blog very soon.

Frankie's Magic Football - Frankie and the World Cup Carnival

It's 2014 and World Cup anticipation will reach fever pitch. Naturally the world's football heroes are getting quite excited about the tournament, particularly Frankie in his latest adventure "Frankie's Magic Football: Frankie and the World Cup Carnival".
After some spirited high-jinks, Frankie ends up slicing the perfect kick - straight into the family's television set after Frankie's rotten brother taunts him during a garden kickabout. Calamity! But before he can try and undo the damage, Frankie and his team are whisked off to Brazil to find three magical items that could help England win the world cup.
Trudging through squidgy swamps, and facing off against an uber-talented team of brazilian street soccer experts and a toothy referee with a serious overbite, it could be Frankie's toughest challenge yet.
"Frankie's Magic Football: Frankie and the World Cup Carnival" arrives on May 1st 2014.

We're back once again with that footballing boy superstar Frankie and his magic football. You may remember we reviewed the first title in the "Frankie's Magic Football" series. Charlotte actually enjoyed the book more than I thought she would (she knows as much about football as I do, ie zero, yet it didn't hamper her enjoyment too much).
This time Frankie and his plucky team are drawn by the magical referee against a crew of dastardly cowboys who, like Frankie's previous foes, will stop at nothing to win the game.
Can good sportsmanship win out over dirty rotten rootin' tootin' tricks? We won't spoil the story too much for you but there's a perilous penalty shoot out that will challenge Frankie, Charlie and Louise to their footballing limits.
It's rare to find a chapter book that can be polished off in the space of an evening with a bit of tempered and diligent reading. As we previously said in our review of "Frankie #1" the books are easily read and digestible, absolutely perfect for reluctant readers who love 'the beautiful game'.
"Frankie's Magic Football - Frankie vs the Cowboy's Crew" is released on 10th October 2013.
Charlotte's best bit: Ooch! Tearing your nice home kit on a character with spines? Not pleasant!
Daddy's Favourite bit: Easy to read, but the cookie-cutter plots could get tiresome after 3 books, things need a bit of mixing up methinks

"Celebrities? Writing children's books? How very DARE they!" could well be your point of view when you hear an announcement stating that a high profile TV presenter, or in this case premier league Football Superstar, cracks out their crayons and writes a story for children.
But what of the children themselves? What do they think about the books?
We'll be taking the rather different approach with our review of "Frankie's Magic Football #1 - Frankie vs the Pirate Pillagers" of distancing ourselves completely from Frank Lampard's 'creds' as a footballer - because without the accompanying press release we'd have ended up googling a heck of a lot just to figure out who he actually is. We just don't do football at all at home.
"Frankie's Magic Football" is a series of football based books featuring the titular Frankie, his friends Charlie and Louise and of course not forgetting Frankie's awesome dog Max. After Frankie wins an old football at a fairground stall, Frankie discovers the football has magic properties, and can propel the adventuresome trio (and Max too) into a fantasy world where they're pitted against teams across space and time, aided by a mysterious referee.
Frank claims to have come up with the characters and ideas as stories made up to entertain his two daughters (though it's worth also reading this interview with Frank too for a little more background and clarity on the difficulties the premier league star encountered while writing a children's book).
The story's fantasy setting means that for Charlotte, someone who knows about as much about football and footballers as I know about plumbing (believe me, if you saw our house a week ago, you'd know I really don't know anything about plumbing!), there is a level of interest beyond the obvious football and sporty stuff.

Football Legend Frank Lampard can weave through a field of players or weave a tale or two
Moral lessons about standing up to bullies, about sportsmanship and cheating are woven into the story as Frankie and his friends face off against The Pirate Pillagers - a footballing team of nasty coves who will stop at nothing to win the match. With the prospect of being marooned on a desert island for the losers, there's everything to play for and as Frankie often points out - there's always time for a game of football!
Mike Jackson's illustrations aren't too bad, and help break up this early chapter reader. I expected to read this over the course of a few nights at bedtime to Charlotte but we managed to get through it in one sitting (it's fast paced, a very easy read and quite do-able to digest it in one go).
With my cynic's hat on I'd have probably joined the voice of dissent when the book deal was originally announced but without a doubt the "Frankie's Magic Football" series (with two books available now - Pirate Pillagers and Rowdy Romans, and a third on the way to eventually contribute to a set of 5) can easily achieve its core aim - To engage reluctant readers, particularly sports mad or footie-obsessed boys who would normally avoid books like the plague. There is every reason to cheer from the sidelines for anyone who takes the effort to use their influence and name to achieve that aim.
Charlotte actually really enjoyed this book and can't wait for me to read the second (I know, I can't keep putting it off forever so we will follow up this review with "The Rowdy Romans" at some point).
Interestingly, the books feature a 'Top Trumps" style collectable card game at the back of the book for children to cut out and play once they've collected the set. A great incentive to persevere with the series.
All told, the final word should come from Charlotte who - despite being slightly younger than the book's core target audience - enjoyed them enough to want to hear more about Frankie and his friends.
"Why doesn't Louise do much, Daddy?"
Charlotte's best bit: Max - who can actually talk once Frankie's Magic Football weaves its spell.
Daddy's favourite bit: There's actually some fairly atmospheric scene setting early on in the book, but it's strictly a game of two halves, Ron, and it'll take you a lot less than 90 minutes to charge through this.
